Trump's Capture of Maduro: Turning a Global Superpower into a Lawless Actor
Against the backdrop of the widespread uncertainty surrounding the US strikes on Venezuela, the seizure of leader Nicolás Maduro, and Donald Trump's announcement that the US will “control” the country and “reclaim the petroleum resources”, a single fact remains evident – this establishes a deeply alarming precedent.
A Grim History and a New Escalation
The United States carries a troubling legacy of meddling, military incursions, and control in that part of the world, but the recent overnight operation saw its initial significant armed assault on the continent of South America. “The preeminence of America in this region is now beyond dispute,” Mr Trump declared.
The choice to militarily strike another state and abduct its leader – just a short time after he openly looked for a diplomatic solution – possesses far-reaching consequences. This ought to concern everyone.
Deep Instability for a Nation in Crisis
Venezuelans have endured a repressive, kleptocratic and incompetent regime under Mr Maduro, commonly thought to have fraudulently won the most recent election. They now face profound uncertainty at best. Mr Trump has remarked that Maduro's second-in-command, Delcy Rodríguez would follow US instructions, and brushed aside rightwing opposition leader and Nobel prize-winner María Corina Machado as a viable alternative.
However, Ms Rodríguez, now the acting leader, has so far sounded notes of defiance – and other factions of the headless administration are even more hardline.
A Shift in Global Role
A man who was elected promising to abandon foreign wars now says he is “unconcerned about deploying troops”. Redesignating the Department of Defense as the Department of War was not merely symbolic. He no longer views the world’s superpower as a global policeman; he is transforming it into a rogue state.
He is convinced that the America's power allows it to do as it wishes with scant penalty: consider the attacks in Nigeria and against Iranian nuclear sites. He claims that Venezuelan oil means this latest episode “will pay for itself”.
An Attack Without Legal Justification
George W. Bush invaded Iraq on a lie. But this action without legal basis came absent any United Nations mandate or authorization from lawmakers; the opposition party was kept in the dark and say they were deliberately deceived in briefings. Mr Trump doesn’t seek to bend international norms, but to shatter them.
Put aside the implication this carries to global powers like Russia and China, and question the future path of the United States. While the raid reportedly killed 40 Venezuelans, including civilians, not a single US soldier was lost. Mr Trump’s growing sense of invincibility will likely encourage more reckless actions.
The Thin Pretext and True Motives
No one buys the excuse that this is related to the drug trade. Venezuela is only a secondary pathway for cocaine; Mr Trump recently exonerated the former Honduran president Juan Orlando Hernández for narcotics and arms offenses. Mr Trump himself has stated plainly that he is propelled by the lure of oil as well as a desire to project strength, the ideology of some in his administration, and the desire for glory as his standing with the American public falters.
World Leaders' Silence and a Weakened UN
The worldwide reception, especially in Europe, has – with honourable exceptions – been surprisingly subdued. That’s not because of Mr Maduro’s sins, but anxiety over Mr Trump’s wrath. The strong reaction from UN Secretary General António Guterres was notable, but this episode highlights the UN's diminishing clout.
Mr Trump’s voters who oppose foreign entanglements could yet press him to turn attention back home – but escalating insurance prices, economic unhappiness and other domestic scandals fuel his desire for external drama.
It has been less than 12 months into his presidential term. The international community may regret it if they fail to speak up today, with the question of which nation is next looming.
