This Swine Life: Pig Named 6-7 Spared by Miami Dade County Leader.
Although not quite at the equivalent scale as granting clemency to holiday birds, but the Miami-Dade County mayor had her own Donald Trump moment this week by ceremoniously saving the life of a swine named Six Seven.
Daniella Levine Cava carried out the annual tradition at the Cuban-themed Latin Cafe 2000 in the core of Miami’s Little Havana neighborhood.
“This animal is guiltless. She deserves this act of mercy. Her criminal record is spotless,” stated the mayor in a speech with obvious nods to the extraordinary and sizable number of pardons issued from the start of the onset of a new presidential term.
“Except perhaps for eating 6 or 7 apples per day,” Levine Cava continued. “Let this swine have a prosperous future without fear.”
The gathering, simultaneously observing and challenging the region’s Hispanic tradition of eating roast pork during the holidays, was founded to replicate the annual turkey pardoning at the White House.
The animal, donated by a first responder, was given its name from the popular vernacular phrase of young people yelling “6-7” – inspired by a rap song lyric – often seemingly at random. The trend became so pervasive that a major dictionary recently made “six-seven” its top term for the year.
A New Life
Six Seven the pig is now set to enjoy its days at a countryside refuge “away from grills and cookware”, according to the organizers' announcement.
“The pig pardon has become a cherished method to kick off the festive period,” said the cafe owner, in a decidedly positive message.
“It represents the spirit of Miami: vibrant, varied, and rooted in traditions that unite the community. Annually, we are honored to observe heritage and mercy in a way unique to Miami.”
Guests enjoyed a meat-free selection of croquettes and cafecito as they marked Six Seven’s big moment.
