Trumpism's most illuminating and distinctive moments – not its most crucial, nor most brutal, nor most threatening, nor most foolish, but potentially its most enlightening – emerged earlier this harvest season. Over the span of multiple weeks, the nation's leader commenced revealing the public his plans for an ornate dance hall double the dimensions than the White House and subsequently started unilaterally ripping down the East Wing to erect it.
He has committed acts countless times more severe – the current estimate of fatalities due to his slashing to USAID amounts to 600,000 and increasing, and recently research projected his energy policies would cause deaths an additional 1.3 million. Yet nothing as characteristic. No other president would have dared – really, no former commander would have imagined – independently wrecking significant portions of the executive mansion to construct a palace-inspired entertainment space, with the enthusiastic participation of some of the richest Americans, the majority of whom have business with public institutions.
We went from 'the gentle will obtain the planet' to 'the meek shall die to cholera'
As disorienting as it is to watch the chief executive seek to颠覆 the old idea of democracy and replace it with its complete opposite, there remains a substantial portion within America who wouldn't consider it completely novel. That is those of us – among senior generations close to half – who were raised within mainstream Protestant traditions.
We have witnessed throughout the years as politically conservative religious groups converted the Savior we were raised with into the complete reverse of our understanding of him. Essentially, they converted a persona of compassion into a figure of animosity who approves precisely the cruelties that he denounced in biblical teachings; this has happened more gradually, through multiple decades rather than months, yet it remains disturbing via comparable methods, a bewildering emotional blow for numerous individuals.
A Harmful Christianity Takes Hold
Therefore allow me to outline the Christ that I grew up with, since in theory Jesus is the center of Christian religion, and because the quickly increasing segment within America could have minimal awareness regarding him as they consider themselves atheists or doubters or spiritual independents. I raise no objection with any of these traditions, nor with any other faith; yet I maintain that contain precious wisdom of substantial value in the Christian story.

The obvious and straightforward fact that Christ from scripture calls for a type of radical love centered on the needy has consistently rendered Christianity somewhat of a controversial faith: attractive to the general public, but due to its intrinsic extremism needing to be restrained. During the 1950s it was contained through watering down – The Protestant faith was so dominant that it practically baptized the status quo.
A Battle for the Best Within Us
Hence I have become encouraged to observe the determined opposition against Trump emerge in this past year. It has been significant comfort to help build the initiative that has taken to the streets via continuous gatherings, and seems to have inspired electorate to participate in numbers in interim political contests. We will need to persist with it, and through comparable resolve, featuring US banners at every demonstration and requests to the highest qualities within national heritage.
We shall be interrogated ... how did you receive the foreigner? Did you receive him and embrace them or not?
America is best defended, in other words, by reference to the best in US heritage, similar to Christianity is optimally secured through connection to what makes it special and wonderful, which is the example of Christ. In both situations does it suggest feigning the worst of both America and Christian faith was nonexistent; it represents both humility and faith, a combination that committed American Christians should embrace.
