Forecasters have indicated a frosty beginning to the new year, with wintry precipitation anticipated over large parts of the UK. Those celebrating are being urged to wrap up as bitterly cold temperatures are forecast for New Year's Eve.

Festive Events Proceed In Spite of Warnings

Edinburgh's renowned Hogmanay festivities are set to take place, a contrast to last year's postponement. This proceeds amid advisories for snow in northern Scotland.

"A chilly New Year's Eve night for those partying, so additional clothing will be necessary," stated the national forecaster.

Fireworks Under Open but Frosty Skies

Across the UK, the weather is likely to be perfect for fireworks shows, with a lack of precipitation and clear skies. Temperatures are expected to be chilly, meaning warm wraps a necessity, according to forecasters.

In more northern areas, skies will be more overcast, but this is unlikely to impact visibility for viewing fireworks. "It won't be low cloud, mist or murk, so you should be able to see fireworks, just not stars," remarked one forecaster.

Extensive Advisories for Friday

Heading into Friday, snow alerts are active across Northern Ireland and extending from Wales, across parts of the north-west, the West Midlands and through to London and most of the south-east of England.

• People have been urged to allow extra time for journeys on the road.
• Hold-ups and call-offs are expected on trains and buses.

Readings Forecast to Drop Further

With the start of 2026, it will be "frosty everywhere where you are," stated forecaster Simon Partridge. The weather are forecast to fall even more as snow and gale-force winds are likely to affect the north of the country.

Around 10cm of snow is forecast to have accumulated in some areas by Friday morning, with up to 30cm on the most elevated routes and peaks.

Medical Alerts Released

Meanwhile, amber-level health advisories are in force for the north-east and north-west of England. These are expected to continue until noon on 5 January, with the mercury forecast to fall to between 3C and 5C.

Authorities explained this signified the weather was likely to lead to major effects across health and social care services. This encompasses a likely increase in the number of deaths among the elderly or unwell or those 65 and older.
