We are checking images and video posted this morning that depict the aftermath of a alleged vehicle-borne explosive blast that authorities in Russia state fatally injured a senior military officer in Moscow.
Russian authorities stated that Lt Gen Fanil Sarvarov was in the car that detonated and that he succumbed of his wounds. A probe is under way.
Our starting point to check the location from which the images originated relied on posts saying the explosion happened on Yasenevaya Street in the southern district of the capital city of Russia.
We used street-view imagery on Google Maps and the Russian search engine Yandex to match the distinctive yellow hue of a adjacent residential complex captured in the video.
Identifying other buildings, lamp-posts and the road configuration confirmed where the footage were captured.
We also checked that the videos were recent and that the images had not been digital alteration.
