Liverpool's Captain Admits Team is in a Mess, Challenges Players on Responsibility
Virgil van Dijk has issued a scathing assessment of the club's disappointing title defence, admitting the title holders are in a mess and letting down manager Arne Slot while doubting whether every player is taking responsibility for the team’s slump.
The Dutch defender could not contain his frustration after the weekend's 3-0 home defeat by Forest, a result that left Liverpool in the bottom half of the Premier League table with a deficit in goals. The club's chair was in attendance to observe Liverpool’s latest loss in seven league games, their eighth loss in eleven fixtures across all competitions, and a performance that fell apart against a Forest side that began the match in the relegation zone.
Poor Second Half and Defensive Lapses
The captain described Liverpool’s opening after halftime as “unacceptable” and admitted “anxiety set in” as soon as Murillo gave the visitors the lead. Forest’s opener was the ninth concession Liverpool have conceded from a set piece in the Premier League this season.
“We had a great three or four days’ preparation but in a fixture you are dealing with reality and the truth is we conceded a free-kick in the opening period and a poor concession at the beginning after the break,” stated the defender. “As a team, we're certainly failing the manager, but we’ve disappointed ourselves as well. Start with self-reflection and then you support teammates, you help each other get out of this crisis because at the present time it is a difficult situation – that’s just a fact.
Van Dijk’s Demands: Take Responsibility
The skipper usually speaks the press after a game as part of his role as Liverpool captain. Saturday was different, however. His voice was much louder – audible enough that any teammate in the Anfield tunnel could listen in – and he expressed visible fury while urging the squad to react. “You should be angry,” he insisted. “The main thing for me is that each individual has to take responsibility.” Asked whether that is happening, he replied: “It's unclear. But you have to do that. It’s the main thing I expect the players to do. It's challenging during difficult times but we must act if we aim to recover of this.”
Summer Signings and Broader Issues
The Merseyside club invested almost £450 million to strengthen a championship-winning team in the off-season but have regressed, with several high-profile signings struggling to contribute so far. The captain maintained that Liverpool’s issues go beyond the new recruits. “It's difficult for everyone,” he said. “What I want is for everyone to be answerable on the pitch. We have to do that in order to motivate one another, to improve collectively. When someone is pressing, you must join the effort. It’s basic things but it’s not happening enough.”
Appeal to Stick Together
Van Dijk continued: “This season we lack any steady form, we concede excessive scores, we are being out-fought and all share the blame for it and I hope this is recognized. It's vital to accept duty to turn this around and it is easy to assign blame but unity is essential. Past successes were collective and won the league and all contributed, and when you go through a challenging phase you have to stick together and not point fingers.
“You have to be a man and confront the hardship and persist, repeatedly because if you want to give up then you are in the wrong environment in my eyes, because this club has been enduring many adversity over those years and we’ve always come out of it. But it doesn’t mean it is straightforward, it’s tiring but there is only one path forward.”
Next Fixtures
The upcoming match in the domestic league is a trip to West Ham next weekend, after the midweek visit of PSV in the Champions League. Van Dijk said: “The next game is another opportunity so what am I going to do, dwell on the loss? No, I’m going to go home and analyze how we can turn this around and I trust that is the collective focus as well.”
