Kyiv Strikes Moscow's Fuel Plant With British Storm Shadow Missiles.
As part of a notable escalation, Kyiv's forces have employed British-made Storm Shadow missiles to target and hit a key Russian oil refinery. The attack was carried out Thursday, as stated by the Ukrainian military command.
Attack Particulars and Strategic Impact
The targeted facility, the Novoshakhtinsk refinery, was reportedly hit, with multiple blasts recorded at the site. This represents not the first instance where Ukrainian forces has deployed these advanced British-supplied missiles to hit targets inside Russian territory.
Military spokespersons noted that the Novoshakhtinsk facility acts as one of the main providers of petrol products in southern Russia and is actively engaged in providing for the armed forces of the Russian Federation.
Diplomatic Developments on the Conflict
Separately, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced on Thursday that he held “very good” talks with representatives of former US President Donald Trump, including Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner. These talks focused on possible ways to bring the conflict to a close.
“It was a very productive conversation: many details, constructive proposals, that we discussed,” Zelenskyy wrote on a social media platform. “There are some fresh concepts on how to move toward real peace closer, and it involves approaches, potential summits, and, certainly, the schedule.”
Legal Crackdown Inside the Country
In a parallel domestic matter, a court in Russia has found guilty a pro-war activist and critic of Vladimir Putin on charges of supporting terrorist activities. Sergei Udaltsov, leader of the Left Front movement, was given to six years in a penal colony.
The charges are said to be based on an article Udaltsov published backing another group of activists charged with forming a terrorist organisation. Udaltsov has denied the allegations as politically motivated and, following the verdict, stated his intention to begin a hunger strike in defiance.
International Detainee Situation
The Kremlin has stated it is in contact with French officials concerning the fate of Laurent Vinatier, a French political scholar currently serving a three-year sentence in Russia and allegedly facing additional accusations of spying.
An official stated that Russia has made an offer to France regarding Vinatier, and now “it is in France’s court.” President Emmanuel Macron’s office confirmed he is monitoring the situation, with all state resources mobilised to provide consular support and advocate for his release as soon as possible.
Symbolic Reconstruction in Occupied City
A theatre in Mariupol, which was leveled in a devastating bombardment while hundreds of civilians sought refuge in its basement, is scheduled to open its doors again. Authorities in control have promoted the rebuilding as a sign of renewal.
However, previous staff from the theatre have denounced the planned opening as “a macabre spectacle.” This project is part of a wider Moscow effort to present its administration in occupied Ukraine, a process that includes the arrest or exile of critics and property seizures from local residents.
It is expected to open by the end of the month with a show of a classic Russian story, having been rebuilt largely anew over the past two years.
