Jets Head Coach Aaron Glenn Confident Kris Boyd Will Make a Full Recovery After NYC Shooting

Jets head coach Aaron Glenn revealed that he has been in contact with defensive back Kris Boyd and is confident the athlete will recover well after being shot in midtown Manhattan early Sunday morning.

Glenn described that Boyd, currently in the hospital, was “positive” during their latest talk.

“That gives me comfort, is that he’s in good spirits,” Glenn commented. “His family, they’re in good spirits and he will walk away from this just fine.”

It remained unclear when Boyd could be discharged the hospital, where his condition is described as serious yet stable.

“Not certain at the moment,” Glenn remarked. “However, I can share, from our conversation, he seemed very positive. Furthermore, that’s what gives me comfort, that he feels like that and he expresses himself so positively.”

New York police released surveillance images Monday of a suspect in the attack on the player. What prompted the attack is currently under review and authorities said it is unknown if Boyd was singled out. No other injuries were reported.

The shooting happened just after 2am on Sunday about halfway between Madison Square Garden and Times Square. Boyd, in his late twenties, was taken to a local hospital after suffering a wound to the stomach, as reported. The assailant escaped.

Glenn said Boyd has been in his thoughts “a ton” since learning of the incident. Glenn added that Boyd and his spouse recently welcomed a newborn.

“My initial concern, he just had a kid,” Glenn said. “My mind went to his family, I’m thinking about his kid and I hope he recovers fully. Those thoughts dominated my thinking.
“There’s a process to this, which I won’t get into, but It is reassuring that he will recover excellently.”

Boyd did not participate this season, after joining the team, after going on the season-ending injured reserve list on mid-August with an injury to his shoulder that needed an operation.

He joined the Jets as a new signing in spring and was projected as a key part of an improved special teams group under the coach and ST coordinator Chris Banjo. However, he got hurt during a training camp practice on 2 August and was taken away on a cart.

Boyd has remained around the team during the entire campaign while working his way back.

“He remains involved with our activities,” Glenn stated. “In fact, he is a regular at our matches. He’s fully engaged. To be one of the top special teams players in this league, he has been instrumental in guiding others.”

Boyd, hailing from the Lone Star State, began his career with Minnesota after his selection in the later rounds by Minnesota out of UT in 2019. He signed with the Arizona Cardinals in 2023 and moved to Houston’s squad later that season. Boyd agreed to a one-year deal for $1.6 million with New York in the spring.
