Former British Soldier Accused of Killing Kenyan Female Appears in Court

An individual has shown up before a judge as deportation processes commenced in the case of Agnes Wanjiru, a Kenyan woman who was found dead near a British forces camp in 2012.

The accused Robert Purkiss, thirty-eight, who is originally from the Manchester area, appeared before Westminster magistrates court on the last Friday, and told the court he intended to contest the extradition. Reports indicate that he was detained on Thursday evening.

A detention order for Purkiss was issued by a Kenyan court in Nairobi in September. Legal prosecutors told the Kenyan court that the accused had been facing a one count, of homicide, and that the Kenyan authorities would pursue his extradition to stand trial.

The defendant served formerly as a medic with the regiment of the Duke of Lancaster, the army unit for the northwestern England, including on tours of Afghanistan.

Agnes Wanjiru, 21 years old, a beautician who had a baby daughter, disappeared after a evening out, and her body was located two months later in the grounds of the lodging where she had previously spotted.

Not a single person had earlier been taken into custody or indicted in relation to her death. Purkiss’s arrest came after a recent detective probe, which came after a exposé in the year 2021 by a weekly publication, in which the publication contacted several serving and ex-military personnel in the unit.

This inquiry has been spearheaded by investigators from Kenya, which, under a mutual defense pact, holds legal authority in the case.
