The scene was a day of rest, and I was in a foul mood, refueling my mother's vehicle. It was a typical gas station that also functions as a supermarket, meaning there's a chance of ending up in line shoppers with carts of somewhat expensive items. A terrible fate to unfold when the sole aim is to pay for some fuel. Terrible.

I was fourth in the waiting line. A single employee working, a female attendant. Something stood out about her. After the ditherer at the head of the line had completed payment for his purchases, his pastry, and a carton of eggs, It seemed to me overhearing the cashier tell him a wonderful day. Odd. Could be I misunderstood, or possibly she uttered it and meant it ironically. The thought crossed my mind if she might actually be a comrade in the war on delays, reflecting my irritation for those who delay straightforward customers like me.

Taking a step forward, becoming the third customer. The next shopper of our line discharged her fuel-only transaction with commendable speed. Again, the phrase came: “Have a wonderful day.” In fact, it was “enjoy a truly great day”. Someone from the US? Here in Stourbridge? Her tone suggested it, and few locals tells people a wonderful day, or merely a pleasant day. Very rare. It's uncommon to find many Americans visiting this town, certainly not employed at gas stations or elsewhere.

I was second now. After an elderly lady engaged in a right old battle with her carryall, her purchases, her wallet and her loyalty card. It went on for ever. After she finished, she as well got told a wonderful day. Definitely from the US. I could have confirmed it by saying something hilarious in her direction, to observe that reaction as they gaze at you, stoically, and say with absolute sincerity: “That’s really funny.” However, nothing occurred of a jest to say.

Ultimately, I accepted for the absolute sincerity – or an impersonation of it, which amounts to no different – as she gazed me right in the eye, piercingly, and told me an awesome day. I felt better for it. It was a good thing.
