American flight controllers are more and more looking for second jobs and calling in sick, as they remain on duty unpaid during the government shutdown, the transport chief has stated.

"The controllers are wearing thin," Sean Duffy informed a news outlet on Sunday, as some flights were grounded on the California shoreline due to personnel deficits.

Following the federal closure on 1 October, flight controllers, who are considered critical staff, were instructed to continue performing their duties uncompensated.

But some have been absent, causing airports to stop or slow their flight operations, which has exacerbated delays caused by weather and other issues.

More than three thousand US flights were delayed on the weekend, and the secretary stated he expects the situation to grow worse.

"I am seeing the pressure," Duffy said in an discussion on Sunday Morning Futures, noting that he had spoken to multiple professionals to listen to their concerns directly.

"They're taking second jobs, they're out there searching, 'Should I work for Uber, am I able to secure another source of earnings to make ends meet?'" he added.

The secretary further mentioned that on Saturday 22 alerts at airports indicated flights would be delayed due to a shortage of employees - among the peak since the shutdown started.

The American federal closure reached its twenty-sixth day on Sunday, rendering it the second most extended shutdown in history.

Duffy has consistently cautioned that flight authorities would reduce the number of aircraft in the air if there is a deficit of security staff.

In his interview, he would not answer straightforwardly when asked if it was safe to fly in the United States, and instead issued a direct appeal to the professionals.

"I require my staff concentrating on the airspace, not on the monetary matters at home," the official stated.

On Sunday, certain flights were stopped at Los Angeles International Airport due to employee deficits, causing disruption at the fifth most active airport in the nation and one of the busiest in the world, as well as other flights stretching upward to the metropolis of Oakland, California.

The FAA notice went out at 08:45 in the morning on Sunday. Numerous trips were operating normally before noon.

Flights at Newark Liberty International Airport, however, were delayed an average of over an hour due to personnel issues, and the FAA indicated Dallas Fort-Worth, the second-busiest airport in the country, could experience difficulties from reduced staff in the afternoon.

The agency advised passengers in the state to consult airlines about updated flight schedules.

The situation comes ahead of Game 3 of the championship, which is scheduled in Los Angeles on Monday evening, and approximately four weeks before the Thanksgiving break, among the peak times to fly in the United States.

Strain on American aviation helped end a federal closure in two thousand nineteen. Back then, the shutdown had entered its fifth week and affected flight services, including aviator instruction.

It prompted several flight controllers to remain absent on the same day on January 25, 2019, temporarily stopping travel at LaGuardia Airport in New York.

That same day, the former president, who at the period was in his initial presidency as leader, agreed to sign a temporary funding measure, effectively ending the government shutdown after 35 days.
