U.S. thespian and writer Jeremy O Harris, renowned for the award-contending production Slave Play, was taken into custody last month at an airport in Japan on suspicion of trying to bring in illegal drugs into the country, authorities announced.

Harris, 36, was stopped on 16 November at Naha airport, located on Okinawa, after a border inspection agent discovered 0.78 grams of a crystal material containing the synthetic narcotic MDMA in his tote bag, as stated by a customs spokesperson.

He was promptly taken into custody on suspicion of violating Japan’s stringent Narcotics and Psychotropics Control Act.

Local customs officials lodged a formal complaint with the public prosecutor to initiate formal charging proceedings against the individual.

A police official in Tomigusuku, Okinawa, confirmed that Harris is still being held. The official did not elaborate on whether Harris has acknowledged the charges.
