Bullish Wilfried Nancy shows no fear of the sack yet supporters unleash anger following derby defeat.
Wilfried Nancy insisted he did not fear dismissal, claiming, “The team is very near to changing our fortunes,” even after moving dangerously close to the exit with a convincing defeat by their arch-rivals.
A Second-Half Collapse Results in Derby Loss
Celtic were in front Rangers at half-time but a disastrous second period allowed Rangers to move level on points with the current league title holders. The former MLS manager, who was appointed from the MLS, has now presided over six defeats in his last eight fixtures.
“We are together with the board,” insisted the manager.
Asked directly about whether he was concerned, Nancy responded: “I don’t think about it. I think about discovering solutions to get the team to improve on details.
Supporters' Anger Erupts
Hundreds of supporters displayed their anger – directed at the dugout and directors – by protesting outside the stadium. Club directors are reportedly likely to bring back Martin O’Neill, who had a fruitful caretaker period last year, should a change be made.
“It’s the results [that leads to pressure]. And that’s the reality for the moment. However in stating that’s how it is, that is not a sign that I am a defeatist guy. Absolutely not. My point is we are really close, really, really close to reverse our form.”
Focus on the Details
The coach continues to cling to the fact his team play well for a half at a time. Indeed, if not for missed chances they might have been more than 1-0 up. “I saw enough aside from the fact that we didn't take more goals,” he said. “I accept that we lost, but I must remain fair.
“The standard we had at certain moments was of top quality. That is a fact. I could not say that if it was untrue. Therefore, when it comes to wins, I noted it's a repeating pattern. That’s why I said that we are nearly there to things turning around. Currently: small things.”
“There were many, many good things that we did, like today again. The issue now is performing for 90 minutes. My narrative would not be the same. That’s why I am a big believer we’re going to be able to turn things around.”
Opposition Reaction Outlook
Danny Röhl played down talk of a championship push even after what felt like a statement victory. “We take it game by game, then we can gradually build something here,” he said. “The belief in the squad is immense.”
