Antony Price, the influential British fashion designer behind some of the most iconic looks worn by David Bowie, Roxy Music, and Queen Camilla, has passed away at the age of 80.

Price was best known for his architectural shapes and dramatic aesthetics, most notably the light-hued ensembles that became famous from the iconic band Duran Duran's landmark music video for "their hit Rio".

"They honored him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the band released a statement across their platforms."

His passing follows less than a month after he debuted his newest line in London, which was his first major show in over 30 years. Singer Lily Allen showcased a dress evoking the iconic black velvet "revenge dress" made famous by the late Princess Diana.

A Pioneering Career

A native of Yorkshire, born in 1945, Price headed for London at the start of the 1960s to enroll at the renowned Royal College of Art.

Upon completing his studies, he began designing menswear at the label Stirling Copper and was the creator of the form-fitting, button-fly pants that Sir Mick Jagger wore during the band's Gimme Shelter tour in the late sixties.

He launched his own brand in 1979 and staged his first fashion show a year later. The show was launched by outfits on model Jerry Hall, who later wore the wedding dress Price created for her for her wedding to Sir Mick Jagger.

Partnerships with Stars

A long-time collaborator of David Bowie, Price was the mind behind the memorable jacket the singer wore for his "As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.

His characteristic talent to blend tailoring for all genders along with his technical proficiency in shaping form-fitting garments made him a "genuine original," as stated by the British Fashion Council.

During the nineties, he commenced designing pieces for the then-Duchess of Cornwall, Camilla, such as various looks for her tour of the United States after assuming the title.

Following a profession lasting half a century, Price staged what would be his last show in London last month in conjunction with the design house 16Arlington.

  • Sculpted Silhouettes: A hallmark of his work.
  • Performative Style: Defining an era of music fashion.
  • Genre-Blending Design: Creating a unique, androgynous style.
  • Clients from Stage to Palace: Including music legends and the future Queen Consort.

The industry mourns the loss to a genuine innovator whose legacy on the visual landscape of music remains indelibly etched.
