This production, however, may align too neatly with the carefully constructed image promoted by Russian state media that, domestically, it functions as a endorsement instead of a challenge.

The Crafted Strongman

For years, the Russian political apparatus and its entertainment industry have collaborated to forge a tailor-made version of the president. This character is a political superhero devoid of flaws, an ex-intelligence officer reimagined as a local 007 who always knows beyond what he shows.

Cinematic Reinforcement

One recent example is a TV series released last October, helmed by a Kremlin supporter. The protagonist is a invented security officer inexplicably chosen to “rescue” the nation from chaos. Although he is called Mikhail, the message is unmistakable: the hero must be a known figure from the secret services.

International depictions often end up buttressing this same narrative instead of debunking it. A new film based on a popular book aims to undermine the Putin cult by framing him not as a cause but as a symptom, shifting the narrative weight to the political machinery surrounding him.

The Fable of the Hesitant President

In the film, the president is shown as having been picked by influential figures to steady the nation because he is “young, athletic and a spy”. They visit him and all but beg him to take the top job. His response is that he would rather govern from the background, desiring enduring influence.

This tale is a key piece of state propaganda: the detached, unwilling mastermind guided by fate. Historically, none of this ever happened.

The Truth Behind the Selection

No one actually pleaded with Putin to accept the role. The position was effectively a selection process with no shortage of contenders. At the centre to this process stood an influential oligarch from the previous administration who expected to run the country de facto.

• Per a journalist who researched his rise, the chosen candidate merely met the necessary criteria: obedient, from the intelligence world, and politically neutral.

Interestingly, the shift to framing him as a “spy” may in part have been triggered by Daniel Craig’s debut as 007. The grittier interpretation led Russian media and social media to draw visual parallels with Putin. Edited images swapping the actor's likeness with Putin’s appeared on Moscow streets, fueling the increasing trend to frame him as a Russian 007.

A Propaganda Win?

Given the casting, an actor popular with Russian audiences, the authorities will not miss the chance to portray this choice as a small victory. The film's omission of mass protests, the opposition, or key figures from its narrative, even though it includes the past decade, is a pleasant bonus for official messaging.

Domestically, Putin is frequently an all-powerful presence who remains unseen on screen. He is hinted at through portraits or orders from on high. In this new film, he at last gets a recognizable face—one that may inadvertently validate the exact legends it perhaps aims to question.
